4 Light-Hearted (Realistic) Romance Dramas That You Should Watch

July 25, 2016

I can’t exactly say what genre of movies I prefer most. Sometimes, I’m in the mood for some superhero films and do a marathon of the entire Batman or X-Men series. On some days, I’d like to bawl my eyes out over some tear-jerker movies, specifically those film-adaptation of books. Or some Kevin Hart or Jonah Hill kind of comedy whenever I feel like loosening up little after an entire work week.

But I have this specific interest in realistic yet not-so-romance films, a bit like 500 Days of Summer-ish, perhaps? You know… stories which emphasize that happy endings don’t necessarily have to revolve around two people ending up together, but instead, put focus on the stories in between. No deaths, no incurable diseases, just the raw reality about love that a lot of people could actually relate to. These feelings are usually triggered by 2 a.m. thoughts where I tend to be over-dramatic.  I don’t know about that holy hour, but it sure gets me overthinking about life and whatnots. Is it just me?

Anyway, I don’t know if I’m explaining it well. So, without further ado, here’s the list of my top 4 gut-wrenching, romance-dramas that you should watch (if you haven't seen them yet).

**Warning: there might be spoilers. I'm not actually sure if I've crossed the line but I'm gonna warn you anyway, so if you decide to scroll down some more, blame's on you.**

4. Begin Again (2013)

Okay, so this is probably the most mainstream film on this list, and I admit, I was initially enticed to watch this because of Adam Levine. Haha! But to be honest, the storyline is really good and actually quite unexpected (for me, at least)

Also love how they highlighted the passion for music instead of the typical love and happy endings I've been blabbering about since the second paragraph.

3. Celeste & Jesse Forever (2012)

Another misleading title. But if you're getting through a rough breakup with someone who was your best-est friend ever, this one's for you.

C & J Forever is about a divorcing couple trying to maintain their friendship despite the obvious signs that everything's really messed up. Eventually, they realized that they both had to accept the reality of their situation first in order to completely move on.

2. Comet (2014)

Comet is somehow comparable with the format of 500 Days of Summer, a love affair shown in a non-chronological way, through ups and downs of the entire six-year relationship of Dell and Kimberly. From the sweet, sweet beginnings, to battling distance, doubts and insecurities, to every fight, even the irrational ones, the got it on point! #guilty

Kinda like how they incorporated the idea of a parallel universe, too. Makes you doubt the whole story itself.

1. Before Sunrise (1995)

And this movie topped my list. An American tourist and a French student meets by chance on a train in Europe. Upon hitting it off, they both decided to spend an entire night in Vienna even when both of them knew that it's probably their only night together.

The entire film was mostly narrative, answering some of life's answers to the questions inside our heads. Some might find it a bit dragging, but I did find myself engulfed in their conversation.

Before Sunrise is both a beautiful stand-alone romantic accident and a grand beginning to the entire Before series between Jesse and Celine.

    1. Hi Jhanz! Idk why, but I'm sometimes fascinated by those kinds of movies questioning existentialism, tackles parallel/multiverses and other alternative realities. Haha lol is that weird? Hahaha. But anyway, it's just based on my perspective. Glad you like the other films though. :D

  12. Begin Again had made it to my list of go-to romantic movies on my first watch.. despite it not being too cheesy and all! and I totally agree with the Before Sunrise, the before series is just too realistic.. everybody can relate to it at some point.

    1. That's what I loved about Begin Again, too! A much-needed break from all the sappy love stories, bc it isn't the reality for everyone. Liked how they shifted the focus on music and career instead. <3 And yes, the entire Before series answers most of our questions we were hesitant to ask. It's like I'm really in their conversation when I'm watching them. Haha. Thank you for coming around, Vienna! xx
