Dahrren's Reading Habits

Reading Habits

I came across this tag a lot of times already, and it's like a sign that I should get back to reading... again. It's been years since I last finished a book (I think?). When I was in high school, I used to finish at least 1 or 2 books per week, and all of that vanished when I entered college. Remember my Sunday Currently, Vol. 02? I mentioned that I was reading Paulo Coelho's The Valkyries. And guess what-- I didn't finish it. Haha! But after the Shift happened, I began reading again. Thanks to Ned Vizzini's It's Kind of a Funny Story (which also helped me with what I was going through at the time). You'll get the shift reference if you've read the book. Ahhh, there goes the inner bookworm in me... making references that most of you probably won't get.

Anyway, as a comeback, I decided to join the tag and share my reading habits with you.

Do you have a certain place at home for reading?
My bedroom, mostly. I find it hard to concentrate on my reading when there's noise around.

Do you use a bookmark or a random piece of paper?
I use my business card as a bookmark. Haha lol.

Can you just stop reading or do you have to stop after a chapter or a certain amount of pages?
As much as possible, I try to finish an entire chapter first before taking a break so I won't find it hard to get back on track when I resume reading the book.

Do you eat or drink while reading?
Yup, I do. When I'm too absorbed reading a book, I don't even go out of my room anymore. So it's best if I take a few snacks and drinks with me before I get engulfed with my book.

Multitasking: Music or TV while reading?
I'd like to say that I've mastered the art of multitasking... except when reading a book. So, nope. As I've said earlier, I easily get distracted. Most probably, I'd end up singing along to the song or watching the TV, so I prefer to just read when reading.

One book at a time or several at once?
One book at at time. It gets confusing when I do it all at once. When I'm reading a book, I feel like I'm part of the story... so I can't be in the different worlds of Narnia, Hogwarts and Panem all at once.

Reading at home or everywhere?
I can do both. But I prefer reading at home.

Reading out loud or silently in your head?
I thought it was weird to read out loud but since I've read that other people do it too, I confess... I read aloud sometimes. But I read silently most of the time, too.

Do you read ahead or even skip pages?
NOOOO! I can't handle spoilers. But sometimes-- /sometimes/ -- I get tempted to look at the last page just to make sure the character survives. And then I'd regret it afterwards. *dammit self*

Breaking the spine or keeping it like new?
I don't wanna hurt my books so I like keeping them new. I always remind my friends who are borrowing my books to be mindful of the spine and to not make dog-ears on the pages. A bit OC here! Haha.

Do you write in your books?
No. Just my initials on the title page (in pencil). Is that counted? No?

    1. I guess this is your sign to hit the books again, too. Haha. :-P And yes! I couldn't resist being OC with books especially because they don't come in cheap prices. Haha lol. Thanks for sharing your thought on this, Anne. ;-)

  3. The last time I've read an actual book was 5 months ago - Carry On from Rainbow Rowell. It's really time for me to find a new one but I can't decide yet. I also can't concentrate when it's noisy and I'm reading which is why I prefer to read at home too. And when somebody interrupts me, I had to reread the last few pages again. HAHA. Like you, I'm also OC with books. They're really good as new in my hands and with plastic covers. I write my name on the last page along with the date when I bought it. :)

    1. Adulting probably got the best of us. Haha lol. Hello, fellow OC. Yes! I don't know how other people manage to read a book when there's noise around. Thanks for sharing your thoughts, Rea. <3

  5. Da, did you ever experienced not wanting to finish a book because somehow along the story it became unappealing to you? What do you do in times like that?

It is because when I got into that situation, I can't not finish the book even it get so boring! I'm weird like that. haha! Now, I'm stuck in this book for 2 months already and I can't start a new one. Nakokonsensya ako di tapusin yung isa. haha

    1. For me, I continue to finish the book. I couldn't stand myself for leaving a poor book like that. We all have our stories to tell so let's read their stories. Hahaha! :D

    2. Hi Bea! I have to admit, I have experienced this at one point or another. Haha! I guess it depends on whether it really suits my type of genre or if the plot really is exciting. Those two to three books that I didnt finish were actually not my picks. They're just sitting on our bookshelves, probably gifts for my mom or my sister (which they also didn't bother reading btw, haha). It just so happened that I've got nothing on my reading list yet so might as well give them a try. That's why I don't feel obliged to finish them.
But I guess if I bought the book myself, I'd /really/ feel guilty if I don't finish them. Give it time. If it still doesn't appeal to you, well maybe try reading a new one for a fresh start.

    1. Aww, thanks, Kai!
In total, I've read more than 60 books since 2009. And ang daming phase ng genre ko! I used to read James Patterson's Maximum Ride Series, Sophie Kinsella's Shopaholic, The Hunger Games Trilogy, and Rick Riordan's Percy Jackson. Haha. But recently, I'm into more mature genres na (I think) from Paulo Coelho, John Green, David Levithan, etc.
