Maybelline Powder Mattes Review & Swatches

Calling all Maybelline girls who fell in love with their Creamy Mattes! I bet most of us were taken by storm when Touch of Spice and the rest of the lineup was released last year, but the matte-gaming just got even better with their latest collection— Maybelline Powder Mattes by Color Sensational.

The line was launched a few weeks ago during the Powder Your Pout Event with their newest ambassador, Kelsey MerrittThere are 15 new shades in the Powder Matte Collection including Nudes, Pinks and Reds. And upon seeing the swatches from Greta's Junkyard (and a few other video swatches on YT), I knew I had to grab a few shades for my own stash. The decision was pretty tough, but since I already had a bunch of nudes from their previous collection, I ended up buying 3 matte lipsticks in each category for me to test out: Touch of Nude (nude), Mauve It Up (pink), and Plum Perfection (red). All three were among the top picks of various beauty bloggers in the said event. I got mine for an introductory price of 199 each from Beauty MNL!

Plum Perfection is a deep, muted red. Your typical professional-looking lipstick that is not too overpowering like puta reds (sorry for the language but that's how I usually refer to fiery red lipsticks ✌🏻 no pun intended). I am not an avid fan of reds because I think it doesn't suit me well, but for the sake of trying to look more mature, I wanna make this shade more wearable.

Mauve It Up is a nice baby pink shade, but turns a bit bright pink (at least on me) after a few hours. I guess this works best on fair to medium skin tones.

Touch of Nude is the perfect MLBB shade for me! It has very light and natural-looking pink coral undertone which, I think, will suit every skin tone. And it's the closest shade to my all-time favorite NYX Soft Matte Lip Cream in Stockholm (but a lot more pigmented and definitely cheaper)! Not too peachy and not too pink. No wonder why it's always sold out on Maybelline counters and online shops.

PACKAGING. Has anyone noticed the little details on the tube? I did. Their previous collections don't have those embossed Maybelline labels (see featured photo), and plus points because they made an extra effort on differentiating the color of the cover per category.

APPLICATION & PIGMENTATION. Works best when you apply a colorless balm first. The product glides smoothly on my lips, but I guess because of the powdery finish, I had to swipe twice or thrice to attain a more solid color. I don't know if it's just me, but Plum Perfection is a bit more sheer than the other shades. You may check out thebeautymove on YouTube for reference.

FINISH. True to its promise, the Powder Mattes do have a powder-like finish. The application itself feels as soft as feather, you won't feel anything heavy on the lips—no sticky feeling. And it has a good matte finish that I really love!

LONGEVITY. Don't expect it to stay after eating an oily meal. It's not Colourpop-Ultra-Matte-level of long lasting because that thing feels like paint on my lips, but these Powder Mattes do last a good 5-6 hours on me. Is it transfer-proof? Kind of, but again, not so much. Just set your expectations right. I personally have no problems with re-applying lipsticks after meals.

OVERALL. The formula is highly-pigmented (with enough swipes). And for the price? Definitely cheap but totally worth the hype! I guess the only downside of this product is that it can be a little drying so I don't use it on a daily basis anymore... which is okay because I still get to use my other lipsticks. Maybelline has been my go-to drugstore make-up brand for years now, and their line of lipsticks have been continuously improving, I must say!
